Identifying a Cockroach:
There are four common species of cockroaches found in Connecticut:

ct cockroach exterminatorGerman Cockroach - Adults are ½ to 5/8 of an inch long - They are tan to brown with two dark stripes that run lengthwise on the thorax just behind the head. They have wings that cover their abdomen, however, they do not fly. German cockroaches prefer moist environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Brown-banded cockroaches - Adults are ½ to 5/8 of an inch long- It is easy to mistake the brown-banded cockroach for the German cockroach because they are similar in size and shape. Females have reddish-brown to dark-brown wings. The wings of the male brown-banded cockroaches are dark brown toward the base and lighten as the wings extend to the tip. Only males are capable of flight. Both males and females have two light yellow bands across their bodies. This species jumps when disturbed. They live an average of three to 11 months.

The wings are undeveloped in female but cover ¾ length of the abdomen in the male; both sexes prefer to run or climb. Oriental cockroaches prefer cool, damp environments like drains, sewers and crawl spaces.

These cockroaches tend to be found in dark, undisturbed areas that are high in humidity.

If you notice any of the signs below, your home or business may be at risk from cockroaches:

Seeing live insects - cockroaches are nocturnal and hide during the day. You will most likely see them when turning on the light in the kitchen at night.

Egg cases and cast skins - cockroaches shed their skin 5-8 times as they mature.

Droppings - cockroaches leave a dust of black droppings less than 1mm wide and of varying lengths.

Odor - established cockroach infestations produce an unpleasant, musty smell.

Damage - cockroaches are omnivorous, which simply means that they can eat anything: not just human food and garbage, but their own cast skins, live or dead plant material, leather, glue, hair, wallpaper, fabrics and starch in book bindings.

Roach Control:
Cockroaches have a very high reproductive potential and can pose serious health risks to your family and business. In addition to standard liquid treatments we also use poison baits to kill an existing population. Oriental roach control requires particular attention to damp crawl spaces, basement and floor drains. Sealing cracks around the exterior of your home or business and installing screens in all the vents will help prevent these pests from returning.
